Memory from a Residency: Second week in Ii

17/10/2010

After few days that I needed to get used into a new place I finally found a good concentration on my works. During the second week I did a new self portrait, but smaller and better than the first one I did on my firsts days in Ii, in the same time I kept on drawing. Now my personal goal is to reach on oil paintings the same freedom of composing, to making mistakes and imagining as I always had on my drawings. For this reason I am also painting some quite big watercolours, because they are in the middle of my two different ways of creating images. An introspective investigation anyway is what move me to draw or to paint, but on painting I still feel myself very much bound on what I see in the mirror. A good friend suggested me some words written by J. Berger who said something like “drawings are made to free from hard memories, to liberate an image from the artist’s mind once for ever, and put it on paper. The intolerable image can be sweet, sad, scaring, attractive or cruel.” So this is what I want also from my paintings, to be free from the simple representation of what we use to call “reality.
